Using DNG Files

Hi everyone,

I have recently been given a Canon 500D and have Photoshop CS3 installed.

I have used the DNG converter and converted the CR2 files I couldnt open in Photoshop.

When I open the new DNG file in Photoshop, it doesnt seem to open straight away but seems I have to save the file as a .PSD first. I can then start to use the image.

Is this correct? Is this .PSD file still RAW format or similar to jpeg. Or am I doing something completely wrong?!

Thanks in advance, I am new to Photoshop so really keen to start using it.

Regards,

PSD is the default Photoshop file with all the building blocks that you've added to the image still editable, i wouldn't say it's a raw format, but if you put adjustment layers on the images, and save it as a PSD, you can open that PSD and change those layer properties freely.

once you've finished with the .PSD format, you can save it as a JPEG, with no problems, just select JPEG on the save options.

Does your camera shoot dng and jpeg, or just jpeg ?

If it does shoot in dng, it will open up in ACRS (RAW) then you proceed to PS.

A dng file is the pixels shot without any changes. jpeg's are run thru an algorithm or two so a jpeg image has been tweaked by the camera. You can save any changes done with PS in many formats such as jpeg or tiff .

Mike, he's shooting RAW (CR2) and converting to DNG because his camera isn't supported by CS3.

Don, when you open a raw file in PS (CR2, DNG or any other raw format) it first opens in Adobe Camera Raw.
ACR should show the file name as IMAGE.DNG on the bottem of the ACR window.
When you pass the image to PS it should still be named IMAGE.DNG.

If you don't specifically select a format to save to PS will automatically save the file as a PSD.
Does that answer your question?

You seem to be implying that your DNG files are opening in PS as PSD files and bypassing ACR.

Gotcha Steve!

That's what threw me too.
