Use the Gradient Tool or something else?

I want to make a pink texture (normal jpg file) from dark to light (from top to bottom). I have tried to use the Gradient Tool, but somehow I can NOT get this picture to go from dark to light.

I know this should be really easy, if I only knew HOW...? ;-)
