Unlocking help???

Hi, sorry if stupid question......
I have several files that i saved to come back to later to work on, and every time i open them, the image i need to work on is locked, and i cant unlock it...
.why are these unlockeable??

This is exactly what i was looking for. The search bar is the bomb.

Not sure if this is relevant to your specific question, but another situation comes up if you accidentally or otherwise lock a layer. A BG layer of course is partially locked, though double clicking will enable transparencies when areas are cleared. Here is an image of a locked layer and the icon for lock/unlock:

What I do is duplicate the layer and delete the original. It doesn't always work, though.
