University Portfolio Review: Critiques and Advice

Hello To Everyone,

I am a student preparing to transfer to a State University with a great design school. I have only taken a few design classes and don't know much about photoshop but I have to undergo a portfolio review to determine my eligibility. So I am here to make a journal of some ongoing project and to get advice and critiques on the pieces.

My first idea is a digital painting of an enraged bull bucking in the air with arrows in its back. I want to use soft pastel pinks and oranges for the sky and a silky brown for the bull (see BullScheme attachment for a starter palette). I want to create the shape of the bull using semi-transparent basic geometric shapes stacked on top of each other and to use sketchy pen effect for the outline. I also have a poem that I want to have crowding the sky (apparently poems and writings can be submitted in the portfolio).

I am busy with classes but I will try start to play around with photoshop and post my progress this weekend. If anything else this thread will only serve to keep me on my toes with self-created deadlines and to put my creative process out there for critique.

Thanks,

brandon

Hello and welcome to the forums.

Sounds like a cool project, post updates when you have them :)

Thanks Gaussian, I recently bought "Digital Painting Techniques: Techniques of Digital Art Masters" in order to have some really good examples to get me off to a really great start. Hopefully I will get it today to see how useful its going to be. I have some very specific ideas and I need to know how to get the effects that I have in mind, but I'm sure it will get me going. I'll cross that bridge when I get there. So my plan this weekend is to flip through that book, get some good picture examples of the bull and take my son to the zoo... I'm so busy with school but I am determined to create these pieces exactly as they are in my mind by november first.

Until then, if anyone knows any artist that uses stacked geometric shapes to create complex objects let me know, I couldn't think of any but I would love to see how others have interpreted this effect.
