Trying To Make A shirt In Photoshop

I'm very new to photoshop and am trying to make a fairly basic t shirt design. I have looked at tutorials but can't seem to find insight on what I am specifically trying to do. I'm looking to have a lightning bolt striking a rock, with gradient shapes and possible bits of rock coming out of the rock. If anyone could maybe give me some step by step details on how to go about this, or any help at all, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
 
Are you going for more of a cartoon effect, comic, or realistic? That's all a huge factor. Typically for this kind of stuff, when it comes to T-shirt design, I actually like to draw the design out on paper, scan it in to Photoshop and then color it. If you can provide a drawing, I can probably make a video tutorial for you.
