troubles making an image look like a comic

Hello!

I was meandering about Ikea none too long ago and my girlfriend noticed someimages of comic clippings being used for wall art and commented about how sheliked that idea. This sparked a conversation about how, first off, we couldclip images from comics ourselves, enlarge, print & frame them if we shouldso desire... but, more importantly, take our own images & run them throughphotoshop to create those types of effects and styles. Thus, I set out, satdown & opened up CS4 then started to work over an image that was taken ofus at a friend's wedding.

When I showed her what I had done, there was a problem, she didn't like theway that her hair looked... Suffice to say that my girlfriend does hair for aliving, has done so for many years and has been coloring her hair since she wasa young girl to top it all off. She didn't complain, nor take a real issue withit, in fact, she told me that it was fine & to do whatever I liked, so, Idid just that & I talked to her about what she didn't like & tried todetermine what it was that she was hoping for & what she would likeinstead. Now that's what I'm attempting to give her, though, so far as I amcurrently able, simply cannot deliver on my own in this moment. So I've comehere, seeking aid.

To further explain, what I've done is duplicate the original image a numberof times, then take different filters to the layers while erasing bits &pieces to try to create the type of effect we were looking for. I have two main layersthat I've been working with, one I used the cutout filter on and the other Iused the poster edges filter on... she wasn't fond of what either did to herhair. She likes the rest of the image & thinks it just fine, again, sheisn't complaining, but she isn't as happy as I'd like to make her.

Here is the original image

Here is what I've managed to do to the image as a psd

What she told me is that she would like her hair to be more like straightblocks/lines of color, as if someone had gone over it with markers or ink. Sheabsolutely dislikes the way that the cutout filter makes her hair look &doesn’t like the black lines that the poster edges filter gives her hair, saysthat she doesn’t like the way it textures her hair. Ultimately, I suppose thatI’m looking for as much help as I can get. I know that there are a lot of talented people around here and I would sincerely appreciate as many hands on the project as Ican get, thought being, the more options & styles she has to choose from, the more likely she is to find something that she’s fond of & get what shewants out of this project.

So, by all means, if you've seen that someone has already helped out, but, have thoughts on another way you can approach the issue, please, your input & efforts are more than welcome.

Thanks in advance for any & all help with this endeavor

(quick hijack)

Hoogle - That is a VERY cool pattern you've overlaid. I can see lots of uses for that. What is it?

it is actually a duo tone custom made pattern create a new document about 10 px by 10 pixels and then paint in some custom dots etc but make sure it is all symetrical then go to edit > define pattern preset. then when you want to use it select the paint bucket tool create a new layer and at the top where the option says foreground change to pattern and then select your patter and it will fill it up wait I think I have a tutorial somewhere that uses this

god, that's funny Fenix. This is the kind of challenge we find fun! Here are my png versions.

Play around with filters and blend modes. Duplicate layers with a filter and add another. Play with the sliders like note paper with zero relief and such. Then try different of the blend modes and maybe change opacities. Some of the blend modes will invert color, make a picture mostly B&W but keep some colors or add really startling effects, especially once you have several layers interacting with each other. If you have cs5, make the picture a smart object then you can edit or delete the "smart" filters that you apply. And you won't forget which you used.

I think Hoogleman's is best, but I gave it a shot.

I love art history and 20th century artists, so I like Hoogle's too. I love Vafann's too for the colors and the way they meld into each other. Here is a reference to the dot pattern. 60s artist Roy Lichtenstein NY contemporary of Warhol, et al)

Here´s my first try, is this going in the right direction of what you mean? :)

It is! She told me that she really liked the way this made her hair look, there was one other image that I believe might have been done by fenix (could be mistaken, it no longer appears in the thread) that she also liked, but those were the only 2 she had said were along the lines of what she was looking for.

Only thing I can think to do with this is cut & paste like I'd been doing, I imagine that I could make it work so I'll give it a go... But I have no idea how you got that sort of end result & effect.

Really though, I appreciate everybody's efforts & am sincerely thankful to have found so much help on here. I apologize for having taken so long to respond given the quickness of your posts & efforts. Nevertheless, I'll post what I manage to make happen as that happens, in the mean time, thanks again everyone, much appreciated!

I could give you the PSD so you could follow what I did, but I have been looking and now I can´t find it. I think I might have moved it to an external hardrive when I was trying to clean up this messy one, or thrown it away since I didn´t think I would be needing it. I´ll post it if I can find it, that might help. :)
