3D Trouble with .mtl files

I am just starting to work in 3D. I can open and use an .obj file with no problem. If it has an associated .mtl file, all of the documentation I can find states that the textures should import just fine. I do have the .mtl files in the same folder as the .obj files. No matter what I do, the .obj files seem to come in not only with no textures or materials, but usually with just one material zone, even if that is not how the .obj was created to begin with.

I am really new at this and am very frustrated. Can someone please explain in simple English what I am doing wrong?

Thanks!

if you have downloaded a model for example that has associated files, in your texture library that your model consists off will probably all be showing as the default texture because the person compiling the files would have a different directory name, so it will be looking under c:\users\pc username then whatever directory the folder is in the problem with this is that your computer username will be different so you have to renavigate to the folder via texture replace or alternatively just highlight all your associated files and drag them into your current texture library
