Trouble With Gradients

I have a client that I'm making a header for. One of the shapes in his logo is type of "swoosh". This swoosh I'd like to make it look like it fades into the scene, thus a gradient around the outside edge that fades to transparent.

1. How to I create a gradient that follows the outside edge?
2. How do I create a gradient that goes to transparent?

I realize I could make the gradient goto the background color and it would look like its blending, however I want to move the logo around and different backgrounds, thus fading to transparent would be much simpler.

I've attached a .jpg of the actual shape (bottom) and what I'm trying to achieve (top). In the top, I simply used the eraser to create the appearance, however its obviously not very clean.

Thanks.
