Tips for adding a drop shadow

Hello,
I have an image of a guitar finger board. I wanna add a logo on the actual board, behind the strings. I though of a way, which is to just add the logo, and delete the areas of the logo which overlap with the strings, thus making an effect of having the logo behind the strings. Is there any way I could add a little drop shadow on the logo caused by the strings?

Without seeing the images in question its difficult to give an 'exact' workflow but try this...

Instead of 'deleting' the image where the strings are use a 'Layer Mask' instead.
You can then copy the area of the strings where you want the drop shadow, (be generous), and copy the Mask to it.
If you then INVERT the mask any effects you add to that layer will only be where the strings are.

You can then adjust the mask to fine tune where the shadow is.....(d'ya see what I did there?) :bustagut:

A bit 'general' but it should work.

Regards.
MrToM.
