The Eraser Tool

I am having problems with my eraser tool as it seems to have a mind of its own some times when i start to erase it is a simple cross hair eraser and i need it to be a visible circle else i cannot see the edge, i have gone into edit,preferences and cursors and nothing seems to make it change to the outline can anybody tell me what i am doing wrong?
 
its caused by low memory or RAM for PS to use, I would recommend to either zoom out the image ( sometimes this works) or simply increase the RAM space higher if you can.
