While I am a formally educated graphic designer, most of what I know didn't come from school.

Design schools teach you things such as layout, composition, and industry related stuff, but they don't teach you much about common effects, and how to achieve unusual looks a client may want. Most of my PS knowledge was taught to me by 4 guys.

Deke McClelland - THE Internet god of Photoshop

Corey Barker - Shows you many interesting and cool techniques

Chris Orwig - Professional photographer, and great for those who are more into retouching images, and correcting colour errors than PS SFX. Find him at Lynda.com, and on Google

Howard Pinsky - A Deke McClelland in the making, only less technical and more technique focused.

Whatever buddy. If you can point to someone who knows more about PS than Deke McClelland, link him/her up.

The problem with the likes of Deke McCelland, CVory Barker, Scott Kelby, Matt Kloskowski, and even Russell Brown (perhaps not Russell Brown - you'd have to give the guy who makes the software credit for knowing how to use it), is that they are educators. Their prime function is to write books, and produce video about Photoshop. I can't even bring myself to type out the other name mentioned in the OP because he is appalling! Te get serious information about Photoshop, you need to go to someone who uses it to produce illustrations for world class publications all over the globe, and that is Steve Caplin.

I took this back in 2011 and I have added a more Photoshop books since then, and the Steve Caplin books are stand out winners. Honest Indian

Agreed, if you want to use Photoshop for illustration, but if you're looking for practical technical info on how PS works, and to get a good understanding of how the program operates, Deke is king.

Also, who do you think is appalling? Chris Orwig or Howard Pinsky?
