Texted fonts with transparent background

Hey y'all. I'm having a bit of trouble with textured fonts. I'm making a t-shirt design, and used a varsity style font, and added a textured layer on top of it, and chose multiply for the texture layer. This gave my fonts a nice vintage look. However, when I remove the background layer, all I can see is my texture image... no fonts, no transparent background. I'm trying to get a transparent background so that I can place this onto t-shirts of various colors. Can anyone provide a suggestion? Thanks!

I figured it out. I needed to apply masks to the individual layers instead of a mask layer on top of everything.
