Hello, I am using an old photoshop CS3 on a 5 year old Macbook Pro. I recently upgraded to OSX 10.9.2. When I try and use the text tool only dashes appear. Can anybody help me fix this problem?

Are you sure that your text size is large enough? Or that you're using a usable font? Try changing to size 100 font with a default font like Arial or Tahoma. Post back here, let me know if it worked for you. I'm not good with technical issues in photoshop but I'll see if I can help you figure it out at least. :)

Okay, try this. Open up your photoshop, and go to the text tool. Click the big T with the small arrow to the right of it, This will pull up another menu. Then click the circle with the arrow pointing RIGHT in it. It will be small and in the top right of this new box. Click "Reset Tool" and then confirm it. Then do the same but instead of clicking "Reset Tool" click "Reset All Tools." Again, Confirm it. Close out all documents and exit photoshop. Re-open photoshop and try using your text tool again. Report back with results. :]

When I click on the T with the small arrow. I'm clicking on the small arrow to get the box to come up right? If that's the case the only thing in the box is Horizontal type tool, Vertical type tool, Horizontal Mask Type tool and Veritcal Mask type tool. I don't see the circle with the arrow

The text tool you'll need to click on is in the top left of your main photoshop window when you select the text tool.

I've attached two images showing where you should click. In the second image, when you click the circle with the small arrow, it'll bring up a drown menu. That's where you click reset tool and reset all tools.

I had the same problem with the circle/path designation. I finally decided there must be something corrupt in that document since when I opened others it didn't happen. Try a new doc and see if this works. Otherwise, before you do anything drastic, try resetting preferences.

Perhaps you'll get more helpful input than this.
