Help!! So frustrated at not being able to do this.

I need to downsize a photo for a website (a mugshot to accompany a bio basically) and the quality turns to crap each and every time I attempt it.

  • I am using CS3
  • My original photo is 4272 px x 2848.
  • I've cropped the original photo to just being a "head and shoulders" photo of 1656 px x 1698 px
  • I need to downsize it to (w) - 100 px x (h) - 87 px
I have tried downsizing by:

  • Image > Image Size etc;
  • Placing the photo via "smart object" onto my 100 px x 87 px background and then sharpening;
  • Sharpening first and then attempting all of the above.
Is the problem that my original photo is too large? Is there anyway of solving the problem without having to redo the photo?

Here is the original cropped version at 1656 px x 1698 px

This is the version at 100 px x 87 px

Would very much appreciate any assistance - thank you. :redface:

That was so helpful, thanks so much Paul. I've researched for days and had never come across reducing by percent. I think it has made a big difference. I still can't quite get it down to 100 px x 87 px but the after shot above is at 141 px x 145 px so I'm going to leave it there. Thanks again!
