Super Newb Question - How to Change Color Without Jagged Edges?

I'm working on a social media icon rollover png. I need the bottom row of icons to be slightly lighter than the top row for a mouseover effect.

I know this is probably something easy I'm screwing up, but when I use bucket fill to change color, I get that circular jagged edge look.

What's the secret to changing the color of a circular object without the jagged edges? I very much appreciate any help. Thanks!

Added attachment below where you can see the jagged effect - I just bucket filled with the lighter color.

well it's not as simple as you think...

first i hit cmd+click (ctrl+click windows) on the layer thumbnail, to select the whole layer

then i clicked add layer mask

then i right clicked the mask thumbnail, and hit "refine mask"

then i adjusted both the smoothing, and contrast sliders about halfway
-you can change these values to taste
