I am working on creating some custom boot logos for a multimedia device and I'm dealing with a size limitation which requires the gzipped image to be under 128KB. I've found that the more data that exists in the image (lines, colors, etc) the less gzip can compress it, even though the different images are all the exact same size on the disk. For example, my plain text compresses to under 50KB, a logo containing a wireframe map of the world and some text comes out to 211KB, and the Mona Lisa comes out to about 975KB.
One of the things I would like to do is subtract specific colors from my images to reveal the transparent background, since on the device transparency shows as black. I'd like to take any true black or colors that are indistinguishable from it and remove them from the image so that I can conserve the limited space available. Is there a tutorial I can read or instructions someone can give me on doing this? I'm a computer geek, just not versed in Photoshop and need some help
Thanks,
Overkill
