"Stroke Path" doesn't seem to do as it says any more?

Hi everyone,

I don't really consider myself a photoshop newbie but I'm obviously being thick about something here.

I'm using CS and up until recently everything was working fine but now when I have created a path and select the 'stroke path with brush' option, it simply strokes the actual points i created on the path, not the whole path itself. I'm getting frustrated with it now as I don't know whether it is something I have clicked or changed or whatever unknowingly that has caused it to do this. If anyone can shed any light it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys :D

hm strange, do you have a screenshot of your stroke is the stroke set for dotted line maybe?

Hmm, as far as I know I haven't changed any brush settings. I have the pen set to 'paths' (rather than shape layers or fill pixels), and I have the brush set to the standard solid default when I click 'stroke path'. I'm not sure how you would go about setting the stroke to dotted?

Here is an example of the problem I am having:

those dots look like a separate layer.just close it? they do not look like the anchor points I'm use to.

Are you actually creating curves as you go and not just laying down points?
If you're just clicking and putting down points everything between the points is a straight line.

Well I think I'm creating curves, I'm doing the same as I have always done. I select the pen tool and have it set to the "paths' option. Although I do use the alt key to get rid of the bezier between each point to keep the curves neat. I don't know whether this could be affecting it. I should have said, in the picture i posted above, I outlined the black object all the way round and applied "stroke path with brush" in pink, but it only brushed where the points where. How would I know if I was just putting down points?

You're not making things neater, you are converting the points. Using the alt key and clicking a point will convert it. Alt click and drag a corner point to give you bezier curve handles, alt-clicking a bezier curve will convert it to a point. When you choose stroke, PS will use the last tool and it's settings.

Before you stroke a path, select the tool you want to use and set it the way you want. Now just hit the stroke icon at the bottom of the paths palette and it stroke using that tool.

I see what you're saying.
Hawkeye clarified what you were actually doing with the Alt key but I loaded you're attachment in PS and zoomed in.

I see the path around the image and the curves you've created but only the points are showing color.
Very strange.

Did you try resetting Photoshop preferences yet?

I recommend this a lot because it's fast and easy.
Often it helps, sometimes no.

Thank you Hawkeye! Genius. I just had a look and you're right, it's working perfectly now. I feel like a right tool now!
Cheers guys I'd have been there all week trying to figure it out! :D
