Strange Photoshop Colours in jpeg

Hello All,

I'm having quite a similar issue with PSCS4 displaying JPEGs with a dark purple cast. However, it seems as though I'm experiencing quite a bit more peculiar because this is the case with all JPEGs--includes files from my camera, phone, friend's camera, istock, etc. What's odd is that when I change the color mode from RGB to CMYK, (Image>Mode>CMYK Color), it displays the color perfectly. See images:RGB - No Edit.jpg
RGB to CMYK.jpg

I have checked color settings (ctrl+shift+k).
It is obviously not monitor calibration.
The only way I found to fix this was to totally uninstall PS, including saved settings/preferences, and reinstall. I did that two days ago and all was normal until this morning.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Please let me know if you need any further details.

thanks!

Re: Strange Photoshop Colours in jpeg - Bright Purple and Grey!

What is the jpeg's source ? What color temp ? Have they been in RAW?

Source of this particular image is my Nikon D60, shot in jpeg format. This file was never an nef or tiff. Interesting note. I apologize, but I do not know how to find color temp.

So to see if RAW files had the same problem, I shot a quick image this morning, again with the D60, in the native RAW format. The image looks fine in ACR, without any modifications I continue into PS and the image has the same dark purple overcast. If I save without modifications and open with Windows Photo Viewer, the color is perfect. If I convert to CMYK in PS, the color looks normal. See below:

GDJ's problem is, IMHO, completely unrelated to the main problem being discussed in this thread. None of the same artifacts are seen, etc. He may want to open a separate thread to discuss his problem.

OTOH, ToolsAndTimber's (T&T's) problem is one the strangest PS problems I've ever seen, having worked in this field for decades. Immediately, I can say that the corrupted image is not at all typical of a corrupted JPG file, as I've seen dozens of these over the years. Nor does it look anything like a color space or monitor calibration problem. This leads me to believe that it was done intentionally, as suggested above, possibly for copy protection.

To try to glean some insight into the problem, I tried opening his original file in quite a few different programs to see if there was a pattern. I can't see any pattern, but perhaps someone else can.

All of the following applications display the image correctly:
  1. Microsoft Paint
  2. VuePro,
  3. Irfan view,
  4. Image analyzer,
  5. Photoscape
  6. Microsoft Digital Image Starter Edition
  7. Microsoft Office Picture Manager
  8. Quick Time Picture Viewer
  9. XnView
  10. ACR (CS6)
  11. LR4
  12. Raw Therapee
  13. Photo Mechanic
  14. Rotate 1x CW and 1x CCW using the right click menu in Win 7 and it opens fine in PS
  15. EXIFtool
  16. Photo ME
  17. Opanda EXIF viewer

All of the following applications do NOT show it correctly or fail to open the file:
  1. PS CS6 - as described earlier in the thread - shows the same no matter what you do to the color profile on import
  2. Adobe Elements 6 - same as PS
  3. View NX - shows only part of the image and that part has fine vertical lines through a B&W version
  4. Capture NX2 - refuses to open it.
  5. Canon Zoom Browser and Canon DPP - show it with a pink / magenta background
  6. Capture 1

I've got to admit that I'm completely stumped by this one. I realize that there is a very simple solution to his problem, but I would still like to hear from anyone who thinks they know what this is about.

Tom

Re: Strange Photoshop Colours in jpeg - Bright Purple and Grey!

Thank you, Tom. Good suggestion. Was hesitant to do so until receiving some confirmation that it was different enough to warrant a new thread.

Please let me know if you have an insight on the issue.

Cheers,
