So I want to learn ALL of Photoshop

I need information on learning all of Photoshop, from the most basic to the most advanced aspects of the program.

Let's say that I have infinite resources, and I want to learn at home (so no schools or taking instructor led classes), what is the best learning resource available.

I like having lessons where it says "this is how you do it, now you do it" and provides the resources needed to practice what is being learned.

Now, one thing to keep in mind, I am NOT an artist. I really enjoy using Photoshop to take photos and other media and making magic. I hope that makes sense.

Here is an example of what I am currently working on, it's rough but for what I know (or really don't know) I think it's not bad.

I really appreciate any advice you all can offer.

Practice, Practice, Practice.........Then grasshopper, it will take lots of time and effort. I know folks, who PS daily, for 20 + years, and are still learning. Find an area that you enjoy, watch lots of tuts, join Kelby Training or Lyndia (sp?) and read the forum.

I think that it will just come with time. As you learn new things by watching tutorials you will find strategies and tools that you can use to apply to other things. Try learning the basics. From there try to do things by yourself before searching them up. I make PS Tutorials on my channel (for very simple things) you can check them out depending on what you are looking for.

Sam, your lucky that your currently living in the information age! The internet is a gold mine! My best advice for you is to set yourself a goal of reading and executing at least two or three tutorials (written or video) a day! Start with basic techniques such as learning how to use the specific tools. Don't be choosey! Just pick one and go! I guarantee you will learn something from every single one! Gradually move on to more complicated tutorials. If you can't find the specific assets for a given tutorial, use any that are similar. Your final product does not have to be exact. Repetition will drive home basic techniques and principles. Practice, practice, practice, and then practice some more! You can almost find a tutorial on just about any effect Photoshop is capable of creating!

Unfortunately, there are some fundamental artistic principles that you must learn! Perspective and lighting are the main ones to concentrate on.

So get started on those tutorials!

Thanks for the great replies here.

I totally understand that there are artistic fundamentals that have to be learned and understood, when I said I am not an artist what I meant is that I can not draw, sketch, paint or in any way create art from scratch.

Also the reason I am looking for something that is at least partly structured as far as a series of guides, tutorials, classes, etc.. is that if I just jump around topics and ideas I will never get anything done. My ADD will get the best of me and "oooohhhh shiny!......

PSD tuts is another way to find organized, basic tutorials. I took a basic community college class years ago, then learned a LOT from lynda.com, $25/mon. At that cost you can learn plenty in a month or two if you apply yourself, and it's a pretty inexpensive way to learn. College classes will set you back -- though they are very valuable since you have a hands on tutor in your instructor.

I continued to learn by joining the forum. One of the best ways I found to learn here was by participating in our regular challenges. Of course you need to know the basics . . . like we all agree. Practice, patience, perseverance. And don't forget play. If you can't have fun, you're following the wrong star.

I just spent a while looking through Lynda.com and then paid for a year of premium.

First I really like Deke a lot and I also found a ton of other stuff on the site I can use.

Thanks, I watched a few of his videos several years ago and I found him to be a lot of fun.

You need to learn how to use the tools first and that's not as easy as it sounds.
There are many, many ways to do the same thing, some are easier than others, some are better than others, but usually none of them are wrong.

How you learn depends on your preferences.
If you like video tutorials like me try a 7 day free trial at Lynda.com.

If you like books go to the library or the book store.
Hang around Photoshop Gurus will help too.

I went to Lynda.com today and paid for a year of the premium service. Now I need to watch as many videos as I can on every subject that I find interesting to get my monies worth :)

If it's not too much trouble could you watch all the illustrator tutorials and give me the gist of illustrator cs6 please? Thanks.

Samuel, that was a good investment. Bravo!

But don't do all besmirched's legwork at the expense of getting mired down; you'll get lost in evaluating AI before you know the basics of it, not to mention Photoshop Essentials! JK besmirched. Sort of . . . :bustagut:

Believe me, those tutorials are hours long each. But not boring, I will attest to that.
