Smart Object refresh?

Hi all, any help on this would be greatly appreciated!!
I have a psd file that lays out 40+ playing cards for a card game. Each card has variable info (text, icons, colours, etc) and is contained in a separate folder. Icons on the cards are smart objects (i.e. the icon for "move" is a smart object from a separate "move.psd" file). Through out the 40+ cards in the PSD file there are multiple instances of the same icon used on different cards.
My problem is that when i change or modify an icon i have to go through and manually reload the smart object for each instance of the icon. Is there a way to have the smart objects automatically refresh or update (say, when i re-open the file) or a script that might refresh all the smart objects from the source when I run it?
Thanks!!!

Well, without seeing the PSD file in question, I'm going to assume that all of your smart objects are embedded. They could be embedded to a jpeg or a PSD logo file. Either way, you would have to update them individually such as you describe.

Your option would be to replace the SO layers with linked SO layers linked to the logo PSD file (source file). You can update all linked SO's by double clicking the SO layer or you can update the the original source file, either way will make changes to all linked SO's. You will have to update modified content.

Watch this VIDEO for an explanation.

While I don't mind using the linked process, I prefer using a "synced embedded smart object". However, this is usually done in the original creation of the PSD by opening a PNG or JPG file, converting it to a SO and then copying it several times over. These copied SO's would then be used throughout the document wherever I needed the image/logo etc,. When any of the SO layers are double clicked and changes are made, on save all the synced SO's (copies) in that document would be updated. This might not solve your current issue.............it's hard to tell without seeing the file.
