I want to make a shadow at the top of the image. The layer effect inner shadow is what I am looking but it does it for all sides of the image just want the top. How do you do this?

Change the angle of the shadow to 90° and reduce the size. That should work for you. If you post the image in question I might be able to provide additional assistance.

That is not exactly what I am looking for. Here is the original;

This is what RTConetent suggestion looks like;

This is what I am looking for subtract the left and right sides;

You can get that by selecting the blue layer. Adding a inner shadow and increasing the size and spread. Have the distance at 0.

Right, so you want a gradient from the top direction only? You can start a new layer add a gradient and mask it to the blue layer by holding alt and clicking between the layers.

Sorry for all the stupid questions, but would I gradient black to white or black to the blue?

No questions are stupid, the more you ask the more you learn. You'll want a black to transparent gradient.
