setting color to transparent without grayscale?

ok im sure this question has been asked many many times and i did use the search function to check with no results.

i am attempting to make a background image for a rainmeter skin using the lexus lfa hud. after finally removing all of the unnecessary things carefully and loading the image i noticed it had a black background :banghead: i tried to use color replacement, blending options, background eraser, and other methods ive found online but they all seem to either require a complete greyscale image or are not sensitive enough to get the alpha in the image while removing the black.

if someone could point me to the right thread or give me some direction id be thankful.

You could use the pentool to create a mask. Not sure if this would suit you the best or not.

maybe i misworded; i think that would probably take days to do, im not trying to only remove background but everything black in the image and only leave the grey, white, and red without damaging the fading from the circular gradient. i tried the pen tool also but when zooming in it's dificult to get all of the small lines. my goal is to achieve a template to work on top of to duplicate a project that does what is seen in the video. in the video there are other things added on top but you can see the base underneath that is a transparent image. then i can adjust the opacity of the meters and base image later.

ah well no video yet beacuse of low post but the youtube video is "LFA HUD For PC desktop with Rainmeter"

the effect im trying to get is the same as when you set the layer to screen over top of a colored layer. except when i do it with a transparent one it doesnt work

ah so close, i made a layer for selective color adjustment and got rid of all the blacks perfectly but now its just on a white background argh.....im gonna try some more stuff. as of now this is where im at.lexus-lfa-edit.png

How about the magic wand tool? Set tolerance to zero, un-check contiguous, click on some black, and hit delete?

that was the first thing i tried, it gets a horrible result and even with antialising its still super pixelated and doesnt get everything or gets way too much even with refine edge

I didn't make the black on the face layer transparent, I just et the blending options on the wallpaper, which is on top of the face. Would this not be adequate for what you want? What image are you trying to put with it?

Here is View attachment 21138 of what I did, although it is not exactly what you asked for, it is an easy way of getting the desired end result, I think.

ah i see what you did now. im trying to make something like

so that i can use it as a background for a clone of

Why not just get cpu faces by getting a windows gadget and then just editing the images, or make the meter from scratch

i tried making it first which was a fail beacuse everything was uneven. also, windows gadgets are not as easy to code as rainmeter, and wouldnt look the same

Not in a way you will get smooth edges. I would really consider doing on from scratch, as there are ways to get the accuracy you need.

i think there is....idk if you will be able to see but i got this result by cntrlshift clicking in the channels pannel it looks like it got most of it with the transparency intact.
