Selective color not working

Hi all I hope you can hepl as this is driving me insane! i do ALOT of retouching work where i just have my brush on and 'alt click' to select a colot from my image and then use that color to paint with. This used to be great as soon as you 'alt click' the selcted color becomes yours primary in use color but for some reason all of a sudden its becoming my secondary color and i have to then select it or press 'x' to switch. I haven changed any preferences that I can recall its as just seemed to happen and its really effecting my work!
any help please!!!

To fix:

Open the color palette. Click on the "foreground color" icon so that it is selected. Then it should be back to normal.
