Selecting layers

Hi...I want to select layers by clicking on the photo rather than going to the layers thingy on the right side of the workspace. I know there must be an easy way to do this. I'm putting together a montage of several pictures and finding the correct layer on the layer thingy is a tricky task. Can anyone help? Obviously, "thingy" is a very technical term in my vocabulary.:redface:

The "thingy" you are referring to is called the Layer's Pallet. If you will NAME your layers with a descriptive term of your image, that should take some of the "tricky" out of it. (just double click on the existing name and put in a new one) If you are in doubt about what your looking at when you have a layer selected, click the eye icon on the left of all of the others and you will be seeing only the one selected. Hope this helps

Thank you. Is there a way to click on the image in the workspace and have that layer automatically selected rather than to go to the layers pallet to select the layer? When I am working with several images (layers) it would be much more efficient simply to click on the image. Does this question make any sense?

Yes, click on your Select tool...(the top tool) and check Auto Select. I think that will do it.

I'm using CS5. I'm not seeing a select tool. As I look across the top, there is Select with a drop-down menu, but no auto-select option.
