selecting by transparency

I've done a lot of googling on this but no luck. Is there any way to select pixels
based on transparency? For example, can I select all the pixels in an image that
are 50% transparent? I was surprised that I can't find a way to do this. I can't
even find any readout or anything that indicates the transparency of a given pixel,
or any recognition of transparency at all.

Am I missing something here? I am using CS3.

Thanks

That is easy. Select Layer Transparancy(Ctrl-click in on layer icon in Layers panel), go to Quick select mode(Q), aplly Image->Adjustments->Threshold, choose any value you need. Return to normal selection mode(Q again). Here you are.
