Do you guys use a program to take screen shots in photoshop like you display in your tutorials? Or am I missing an obvious answer? ;\

I've never really had the need to 'screen capture' bits and peices of the photoshop work area, but I'd sure like to learn how to do it! I see JoeD is the master of the screenshot, any help would be appreciated. :)

You can slap me upside the head if this is a stupid question. :B

I've never used a program to capture a screenshot, I just hit print screen and edit the image in photoshop. Generally just using the marquee tool to copy the part I want, and paste it onto a new layer on my original image.

Hi Sheba,

Do you use a Mac? If so, what OS? I don't know Windows but illumina's description is the basic technique we all use on both platforms.

I use a special application to choose an option of shooting the whole screen, just a window, or a selection and then saving it in a variety of file formats or sending the image to file, clipboard, or printer. It also allows a variable delay so I can have a number of seconds to go and highlight something special, drop down a menu or something like that prior to snapping a shot. I have another app which turns the screen white so the window has a plain background behind it instead of a desktop image (wallpaper). Basically, though, those are just bells and whistles.

Sheba, if you use Windows; just use the Print Screen key to capture the whole screen (which I sometimes crop) or ALT+Print Screen to capture the active window. If you want to take a screenshot of the layers palette, make sure that you click on one of its tabs first, otherwise ALT+Print Screen will capture the whole screen instead of the layers palette only. This is the case with some other windows too.

Sometimes I mark areas in my screenshot my stroking selections (edit/stroke), or by using arrows (see example)

Sometimes I use special software if I need to do a lot of capturing.
Snagit is the best software in my opinion for this; http://www.techsmith.com/products/snagit/default.asp

Anymore questions? Juuuuuuuuust ask! :D

another voice heard from.

hi. this is probably totally unnecessary, but sometimes we tend to think that the person to whom we are giving advice already knows something that we take for granted. in this case; the print screen key is at the upper right on the keyboard, and on my comp, says, "prt sc". i then go to p/s, file, new, ok, edit, paste. i can then crop, or make other adjustments. hope this helps. boyd

Thanks folks ;\

I use Windows. And thank you Boyd! This makes me look slightly :B but I've never used the 'print screen' before! The first step to recovery is admitting it. lol

I was led astray once and was told I'd need some type of capture software, must have been from someone selling it. lol

Thanks again! And I didn't even get slapped *woo!*

Why would you get slapped?

this is the purpose of the forum.: you question will help others , who didn't dare to ask the question!
Remember this: the only stupid question is the one you don't ask!

For the Mac there is SnapzPro from Ambrosia Software.

Captures: screen, objects & menus, selection and live screen movies with the option of sound recording.

Formats: jpg, pdf, pict, psd, gif and png.

Excellent utility for people needing a bit more for tutorial captures.

Al.
