Saving png

I use a Screen Capture to copy images for eBooks.

When I go to Photoshop with CTL N, I name the file as image.png, set the background to transparfent and select OK. I paste the image from the Screen Capture. flatten the image and select SAVE AS.

Photoshop wants to save as a PSD and I have to select png as the type. I can work on the image but Photoshop still sees a psd file. Unless I save the image as png and relolad the file remains psd.

Obviously, just giving the image a png in the new image window does nothing but name the image.

What am I not doing or doing wrong?

Windows captures screens as jpg. You cannot simply add png into the file name and expect it to be that. Photoshop simply sees that as a description or a name. If you want a png, in Photoshop, File/Save for Web and choose png. Or, you can simply File/Save As, then select PNG as the format. Once done, PS will display it as a PNG .

I tried what you describe, less the flattening (not necessary) and it works fine for me.

Here is a screenshot of the TABS of the two separate images.

The left tab is a combination of the new PSD with the pasted PNG screenshot after it was saved to a PNG format. Notice that it is formatted as a PNG.

If I make changes to the document and again hit "save as", it will again need to be designated a PNG.

The trick is to only hit "save".

Sorry Larry, we were typing and posting at the same time.

My Mac captures screenshots in PNG format, if that makes a difference.

Don't know what OP is using.
Edit: I think he must be using Windows, if PNG to begin with it wouldn't be an issue would it?

...background to transparfent...
I appreciate this is a typo but what a brilliant word! Transparfent!

Anyway, back to the plot.....what exactly is the problem?
Or better still, what isn't PS doing for you?

You should be able to save a screen grab in whatever format you want, but besides that why open a new document with transparency?

As to saving, well IamSam has pretty much covered it, if you OPEN the screen capture image, (in whatever format), with PS it'll save out as that format, (using File > Save), provided you haven't added any layers.

You can paint on the image directly, go File > Save and it'll save it with the same extension.
you can Copy an area of the image, paste and flatten (to just 1 layer) and it will save to the same format via File > Save.

Adding layers means that to preserve those layers the file HAS to be saved as a layered PSD file, hence File > Save will always ask you for a filename and also default to the PSD format...it assumes that as you've added layers you will want to keep them, which in 99% of cases is true.

You still have the option to save to png from here but again PS assumes that if you wanted a format other than PSD that you would use SaveAs or Save For Web.

Why can't you just open the screen capture file directly in PS? Why Ctrl N + transparency etc etc blah blah blah.

Also, if you capture the screen but copy it to the clipboard instead of saving, File > New > Ok will open a document exactly the same size as the clipboard contents, or put another way, your screen capture image, so Ctrl + V will then paste those contents into the new document and it will fit 100%.

If we knew exactly what the goal was we may be able to tell you which boots to put on.

Regards.
MrTom.

PS. If you need a 'no frills' screen grabber that saves directly as png I've written one which you are more than welcome to try.
