Saving and uploading .png files??

Hello everyone,

I am brand new at adobe photoshop. I am using the cs4 version on a mac. When I save a picture as .png and try to upload it to my server it says it cannot be displayed b/c it contains errors. I finally figured out that I can reopen the same file after saving with photoshop in another picture editing program, example: Gimp, and resave the file in that program and the photo will upload just fine. This has been a simple fix until recently when I discovered that gimp doesn't load all my work like it was saved in photoshop.

My question is, why am I having a problem uploading anything straight from photoshop? Why do I have to resave it in another program? That kind of defeats the purpose and I loose some work by doing that.

Any help would definitely be appreciated.

Once I save the file as anything other than .psd, it will not reopen at all in photoshop. Only .psd will reopen. What in the world is going on and how can I fix my main problem?

try preference>File handling> Append File Extentions

I never saw this before.

Only PSD shows no error, so jpg and png and others are an issue.

You can view jpg's and png's in Internet Explorer
After you save a jpg or a png, drag it into IE, does it view or do you get an error.
I'm guessing you'll get an error because of your server error issue, I just want to confirm PS is saving corrupt files.

I don't know if this will help but try resetting your preferences file.

Ok everyone, I found the problem. I wanted to share it with you incase someone else new to photoshop runs into the same problem.

It is very simple really and made me feel like an idiot. LOL

I was saving the files as save as. Apparently you cannot do that if you want to upload to your hosting account. You have to instead select save for web and devices. If you do that for some reason it saves the files with no uploading errors.

Hope that helps someone else down the road.

Cheers!
