If you edit an image with multiple layers and the save it, can you go back to those saved layers? If so, how do you open or get to those images? Using CS4 photoshop.

if i understand correctly you asking can you load and image and undo the edition of the original layers? if that's the questions then - no, you can't do that. once you close Photoshop undo in not an option

Like Hawkeye said. If you want to make a flat image, you don't have to flatten the document. Leave the layers as they are and do a "save as." PS will take care of the temporary flattening to make a jpeg, etc.

ok apparently i misunderstood the question. i assumed that saving layered file as layered file goes without saying . obviously guys above me are right. sorry for the confusion

Basically, what appears in the work/image area will be your output image as you save it, and for future editing purposes always secure a ".PSD" file. In that case, you'll be able to retrieve all the images/layers that has been used for your project.

On a map jpeg I place different location that I've been, each with a new layer. I save as a PSD file vice a jpeg file. This will allow me to reopen the map and get to each location layer??

Lets assume that you have PSD with 3 layers
If you edit layer nr 3, then save file as PSD and close Photoshop; when you reopen the file you will still have 3 editable layers but you will not be able to undo all the changes that you made to layer nr 3 . You have to think in advance. Use non-destructive method to edit your file like Adjustment Layer instead of Adjustments, or mask instead of eraser etc, or make changes on new layer.
