Satin Look

I came across a background that has a beautiful satin look to it. It's not like the satin filter, though, in Photoshop, that puts a reflecting glean on the surface. If you move an eye dropper tool over the surface you can see that the pixels vary between 0x2A2A2A and 0x2F2F2F. So maybe we need a function that scans a solid color and then cyclically varies the pixel color up and down 5 to create the effect. Is there anything like that in Photoshop?

Here you go. I tried to include it with my original post but got an error about no links allowed until I had posted 5 times. Looks like it went through this time.

It looks to me like filter>add noise. I experimented and came up with settings of 2 for amount, uniform for distribution and monochromatic. You'll have to experiment with the color grey you want to use for the base color. I'd say go with the darkest. Add a very slight gaussian blur, about a .2 or .3 (depending on resolution of image).

Duplicate the layer that you've add the noise to. Use the transform command (ctl/cmd + T) or edit menu, flip horizontal or vertical, change the blending mode of the top layer to soft light, and check it against your original.

I think you nailed it, ibclare! Looking at the original at 3200X, below, shows a total randomness, like noise.

By the way, it occurred to me that another way you might be able to product this effect for a web page might be to manually create something like a square 8 pixels on a side, and then hand set the pixels to the various colors observed here in about the same distribution, and then repeat the square in x and y. You could then create squares based red, green, yellow, and have a whole pallet of these things.

LOL Steve, some people's minds are just naturally mathematical. Like yours! I wouldn't ever think of doing that!

Noise is random; so am I. :mrgreen:
 
Thanks mate BTW I used noise setting of 1 instead of 2 and after duplicating and setting the blend mode to soft light it came out very dark so I did a 60% opacity then.
