Restoring Cave diving maps

Hi guys,

I'm an avid cave diver and want to try to restore some older maps to bigger size and cleaner look.
I tried tracing through illustrator and played with PS but didnt have much luck. Here's an example
of an old map:

And here is what a new digital reworked map looks like:

My question is, what's the best way to actually get the oulines of the cave wall right (I dont care about descriptions and all that extra stuff, I can add that later). I want them to be the same thickness and smooth. Any suggestions of making this better? *

Thanks!

I think the pen tool in Illustrator would be the easiest (although labor- and time-intensive) way - just trace the image on a layer below.
That would also give you the flexibility to alter your stroke thickness as needed.

This is an 8x10 of the posted image. I used the new and improved algorithm in Photoshop CC, then Smart Sharpen. I cleaned it up some in ACR before it went to PS. This is compressed with a compression program as the Tiff file I made is about 20 MB. Is this large enough and clear enough? (this server is going to degrade it some, so be aware of that) Download it and print it to see.

Thanks for all your help, the image ALB64 made looks much better. I think I'll give the pen tool a try and see how it comes out. Ill post the results

I also have Perfect Resize 7.5 (Genuine Fractals) I can make this image much much bigger without any quality loss. Let me know if I can help you further. I ran it through to see and I have one that is like 12 x 16 or so.

"...without any quality loss..."

Humm ... I also love Genuine Fractals (aka onOne's Perfect Resize) and Photo Zoom, but even I'm not quite that enthused about them. LOL.

Maybe, "...with surprisingly little quality loss ...", would be a bit more measured way to get across how well they work. :bustagut:

Cheers,

Tom,
This made me curious as to whether or not Perfect Resize is as good as they claim. I saw a video on Youtube that did a demo of an image that was supposedly enlarged by 1000 %. I mean..that is one more huge image. I did a small test using that blue png in the other thread and I am going to post the screen shot of the comparison between PRz and PS CC. I will open a new thread and you and others can judge which is better.
