his is probably the most newbie thing ever, but how do I resize an image in a layer by dragging it with the mouse? Can I get it to resize while retaining its original shape? Can you do this? I wanna fit some things together visually and I don't wanna screw around with numbers.

Assuming the image is on a Layer by itself, Type CTRL+T and a bounding box will show around the image. Hold CTRL (or CTRL+ALT to transform around the center) and grab a corner point of the bounding box and drag inward or ouward, as the case may be.

In addition to what docilebob said; the layer should not be locked if you want to use Ctrl + T (Command + T on the Mac). If a layer is locked, then double click on its name in the layers palette to unlock it. When you drag the handles of the transformation box, make sure you hold the shift key; this will lock the aspect ratio of the image.

Gaussian is absolutely correct, John7. The shift key is the one you want not the CTRL key. That`s a different option.
My bad.
