Hey there, I'm fairly new to photoshop and I want to resemble an effect and apply it to a bunch of my photos for a school project.
Can you guys give me a few simple tips on how to achieve this?

I'd really appreciate some help!

Thanks guys,

You could add a new layer and use the paint brush set fairly large use white and make one click over a portion of your image, then set to soft light and see what it looks like.

Like i explained upload a none 'flared' image and i will try to show you.

Depends where you position the flare effect but you get the idea, others no doubt will be in to improve on my effort that's why this place is so cool.

Also the back ground on the images you first supplied are over saturated in white to add to the 'person' as the focal point.

yeah thanks for taking the first step, really appreciate it! i had a similar result but i'm wondering how they managed to do the colors so well.. they took out the red and saturated the rest, at least thats what i'm guessing.. but will play around until someone else can jump in and help me out ;)

This is a perfect opportunity for me to test something
I would use lens flare and locate the flare where ever and different types of lens flare filters are available as seen below

I did not use a lens flare, i did a separate layer with the paint brush settings adjusted. Same out come but OP want's more...

Try putting a layer of white above your image put that layer in linear light mode and tweak the opacity to level you like, is that what you're looking for

I used the same technique Paul did, I desated the BG a little more and brought down the saturation using a hue & sat layer on the subjects. I also added some bright yellow.

make a Black and white copy, or a layer with the vibrance slid way back.....then paint out the faces and wherever you want color...... a simple mask will work well

I think for a flare as bright to look believable it needs to be justified by having a brighter light source in the background or some really bright sky or something similar. While i do see the sky in this image it is only quite a small area to have a realistic flare thats as bright as your reference images. i'll try to give this a go when i get back home from work where i have access to PS. I quite like the subtle effect on post #15. :)
