Hey all...really not photoshop inclined so I'm wondering if someone could help me out here.

Basically, I would like to have this picture with a transparent heart outline (instead of the poorly done spraypaint) that gives it a digital effect as if I took a highlighter and drew it on the picture itself. I will post the original picture as well if someone cares enough to do this themselves, or can give me a few pointers on how to do this without just printing it out on photo paper, breaking out a highlighter, etc...

Thanks!

rough idea (feel free to tweak shape/color as needed)

Hi Bigsoups,

See the attached image below. If you want to do it like that (I'm sure you can do it much better with a little patience) follow the steps below.

1) Open the file in Photoshop.
2) Double click on the background layer in the layers palette and click okay.
3) The image is in a Greyscale mode. We have to change this to RGB, by going to Image > Mode > RGB Colour.
4) Duplicate this layer by dragging this new layer in the layers palette onto the New Layer icon below. This will duplicate the layer.
5) Make invisible the bottom layer by clicking on the eye icon beside it in the layers palette - you have this as a backup if all goes bad with your work file.
6) I assume you are okay with using the pen tool. If not, take time out to learn it first - this skill is essential in your future if you are serious on learning PS. Pen Tool, Photoshop Pen Tool - How To Use The Pen Tool In Photoshop Tutorial
You should only proceed after you are adept with using ALT on the pen tool to make corrections to the path.
With the pen tool, draw the shape of heart and keep correcting it until you are satisfied.
7) Create a new layer above the visibile couple layer.
8) Select the brush tool, then choose a soft brush with a tip size about 27.
9) Reselect the pen tool, right click, and click on Stroke path.
10) Make sure Simulate pressure is NOT checked. Click okay.
11) Whatever your foreground colour was, you will find a thick heart.
12) Right click on the path and select Delete path.
13) Select the Magic Wand tool, and click on the heart - you should have two selection layers with flowing ants on the inside and outside of the heart.
14) Take an eraser, and rub off all that is within the double selection ants.
Note : From step 7 onwards, we were only on the new layer we created.
15) Select a bright red or some colour you wish and with the Paint Bucket tool selected, click inside the double selection walls.
16) Go to Select > Deselect. That should remove the flowing ants.
17) In the layers palette, on the top, you would find Opacity option. Alter it suitably until you are satisfied.

All the best, and do inquire if in doubt.

Addendum on later editing : I can not attach the file for some reason, but it is similar to iDad's second image.
