There have been quite a few previous discussions about how best to select areas whose edges are soft/ambiguous or whispy/complex (eg, hair against leaves), etc.  For example, take a look at these old threads that discuss creating a temporary copy of the image with greatly increased local contrast, saturation, etc.:
