Removing Background

Ok, here is my dilema. I designed a military patch for the unit I work for but whenever I use the patch image (jpg, bmp, gif, etc) in another program like powerpoint or word the background shows up as a colored square that the patch "sits" on. I know how to make thw background transparent in photoshop but that doesn't transfer to say power point. the question of the day is "how" to i get the background to dis appear and just leave the image of the patch? I have a couple patches from other units that have what I need so I know it can be done. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

You need to save the file in a format that supports transparency, like GIF and PNG, otherwise it won't work. Use File / Save for Web. If the preview of Save for Web shows your background, then you're doing something wrong. Let me know if you got it working. ;)
