I have a load of images that I have been given by a manufacturer, some have white backgrounds and are great. Others, have a black background..and are not great. I am needing to edit these black background images to be like the white background images.

You'll notice for the product (attached images) that there is packaging immediately around the yellow string. It's this bit that I am finding incredibly hard to change from the blackish colour to the whitish colour, shown in the picture with the white background.

Does anyone have any ideas please how I can change this black area to be like the 'good' photo? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Why go to all that bother? Just change the labels.....

MrTom's idea would be the easiest. But if this is not an option for you, here is ONE way this can be done.

Duplicate the layer.
Turn off the original layer.
Create a new layer between the original layer and the duplicated layer, fill with white.
Double click the duplicate layer to open a layer style.

Now, on "Blending Options"
Under "Blend If"
Hold the alt/option key and click the tab slider on the far left of the "This Layer" slider. This will cause the slider to split.
Drag the split slider (now in middle) and drag to the right until the black is gone.

This will leave the outer white kind of dingy.

To fix this, add a Curves Adjustment Layer and adjust to the bright side. Notice that there is a mask associated with the adjustment layer.
Select the mask by clicking on it.
Now choose your Rectangular Marquee Tool and create an ellipse the size of the packaging.
When done, fill the selection with black.

Now notice that the technique has also removed the black from the label.
So you will still have to isolate the original layer, (Cntrl/Com + J) copy it to it's own layer and place it on top of the stack.

Hello to both of you and thank you very much for your responses.

Sorry, MrTom, but I am a bit unsure by what you mean on changing the labels. I've spent 30 minutes looking online to no avail.

Could you please let me know where these 'labels' can be changed and by what IamSam means by 'if it is not an option'? Is it software dependent on the Adobe version or is the Photoshop rookie (me, of course) missing the point entirely?

Thanks very much.

Oh, change the labels on the product itself. I thought it was a Photoshop feature. Okay I get it, but unfortunately it is not possible and so I'll give your details a try IamSam - thank you again to both of you.
