Recreating a logo

Hello

The attached photo is in the public domain and I was hoping to recreate it for a logo on a Website/letterhead, as it looks a bit tatty. The Moon slightly overlaps its black background and the wolf itself - which looks a bit jagged when magnified - needs to be centered a little.

Would I just create three layers - background, Moon, wolf - and paste them on top of one another? I was also wondering how to make a silhouette from a photo of a wolf, though I quite like this one.

Any other tips on how to reproduce this - such as image resolution, save as gif or jpeg, etc - would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

What you have described in terms of layers (background, moon, wolf) is exactly correct.

Making a silhouette is a pretty straight-forward task.

Start with the image you want to use.

Mask off the portion you wish to keep.

Using the Hue / Saturation Adjustment tool, decrease lightness to -100%.

Now the silhouette may be copied to a new layer above your chosen background.

Or pen tooled a selection around the Wolf...

Then fill with black.

Don't anyone use the pen tool anymore lol.

@Rufinatti

You ended up with a blurry silhouette, not sure if will look good against a moon.

Hello Rufinaiti and Inkz

Many thanks to you both.

I will begin work on the wolf right away. I will probably try both techniques. The Pen Tool is possible more accurate - but it's not easy to use (I have to admit to shying away from it, but I suppose practice makes perfect?).

Thanks again!

The Pen tool is the most frustrating tool Ps possesses...

But once you master it, it's your best friend lol.

pen tool is the best tool, if you don't actually use the pen tool :3
(I just place vague points with the pen tool, then then use the direct selection tool to make the actuall shapes

don't put any radius when using pen tool if you don't want to make it blurred... good luck for this, anyway you can try auto trace in Illustrator..
