really simple question

If it has a transparent BG, is just the shape, you can apply layer effects, fx at the bottom of the layer panel and you'll see stroke. Then you can set the pixel width and where you want it located relative to the edge of your shape. Layer effects cannot be applied to a locked layer, so if it is the background layer, double click it then then hit enter or OK. Just be aware if your shape has transparency inside of it, that will also be stroked.

If that is the case and you only want the stroke on the outside, then I would suggest this: ctl/cmd click on the thumbnail of the shape layer; make a new layer below the current layer (ctl + click layer symbol); expand the selection till it is the size of the stroke you want. Now take the lasso and subtract the inside areas of the selection. Stroke the selection.

Wouldn't be surprised if someone has a better idea that the second! That's Photoshop. If there's one way to do something; there are usually 2 or 3 other ways.

the stroke way works perfect thanks guys and ibclare I will keep the 2nd idea in mind for future use aswell :)

Another method is : create your shape, create a new layer and drag it below the shape layer, ctrl+click the shape layer thumbnail while the new layer is still selected then either hit alt+s>m>b or alt+s>m>e (select, modify, border or expand from menu) and type desired pixels to make selection expand or make selection borders (depends on the size of the shape)

and finally choose your foreground color to your favorite outline color and hit alt+backspace. That's what I do if the shape or image has transparency inside...

later you can merge, group or link the both layers if you want.
