Hi all,
I must make photos of engraved medallions, and I was wondering if instead of having to engrave and shoot each one I could take pictures of a blank and then use a photoshop text effect to simulate the engraving.

Could any guru in the house tell me is this is feasible and reasonably easy to do or not?

I'd like to show you what I'm trying to simulate but I apparently need 4 posts to have the right to post links...

Thanks in advance for your advice

I am sure it can be done upload a sample picture of a blank medalion and we will give it a shot and let you know how to do it.

Ok thank a lot!
I've taken a few quick pictures, some showing an example of engraving ("Paris") and some of blanc medallions ("blank").

If there's a way to realistically simulate the engraving with Photoshop, it would save me a lot of time.

Thanks

Make Text layer, enter your text. Turn it to Smart Object. Add Layer Style for it - Inner Bevel or Pillow Emboss, set Fill Opacity to 0. Now go to Edit->Transform->Distort, position and distort this layer properly.
This way everything stays editable: text and font in the Smart Object's content; Styles and distort for Smart Object layer itself.

Ok I find the pillow emboss quite realistic. Smoother than a proper engraving (looks more like a stamping) but it's nice.

These are the first results with just a pillow emboss and rotating the text, I haven't found how to properly distort it to match the angle exactly.

Well, it could be much easier if we had some visual clues for distorion. Then we could use old trick: use Crop tool with Perspective option to straighten out the medallion. Then place this straight version as a layer over original, turn it to Smart Object, and distort it back to it's original shape. This way we would get the right distorion. Then just change the Smart Object content from straight version to our text...

But your pics look already good as they are:cheesygrin:

You have to rasterize the text layer first so you can edit it.

Make a duplicate of the text layer so you have the original text in case you don't like your edit.

Maybe overlay a scratched Metal Texture over your Text.
