hi there
i am not sure if this is the right section of the site to post this on so im sorry if its out of place.

i have got a new graphic tablet(first one). its a xp 1209b-vs. now i am trying to use it and there are a few issues i am having with it and i would really like to know if those issues are common, whether or not they are things that you just get used to them with time or do i have a specific problam:

1)when i connect the tablet it acts like the mouse even outside photoshop. is it normal?
2) when i draw i notice that there are lags with the drawing, i mean its not a pressure problam but rather the drawing itself feels slow if that makes sense.. i draw a curve for example and it feels like my hand goes faster then what appears on screen, is it just an illusion coz im not used to it or is it an issue with drivers, or whatever...
3) i try to draw a curved line for example and it just doesnt goes as smooth as it would have went with a regular pencil on paper, the motion would have been enough if i were drawing with a pencil on a paper but somehow not enough on the tablet with the tablets pen.

thanks to all those that assist

Hi uri,

I'm not familiar with this tablet.

1)when i connect the tablet it acts like the mouse even outside photoshop. is it normal?

Yes and no. You should have the option to switch between a Pen Mode and a Mouse Mode.

2) when i draw i notice that there are lags with the drawing.

This could be a RAM issue or a slow processor and even a driver problem. If your running Vista or Windows 7, take a look at this website.

3) i try to draw a curved line for example and it just doesnt goes as smooth as it would have went with a regular pencil on paper

This is common with all tablets. In the Brush panel, under Brush Tip Shape slide your spacing to 0, in the Brush Dynamics section, make sure all jitters are set to 0. Check the Smoothing option when working with a tablet. See if this helps.

Good stuff Sam. I use a Wacom, Tablets are just a mouse with a stylus. Make sure you are set up correctly and have it set up correctly. Google a few tuts on you tube for your tablet. Setting up your brushes dynamics is a must.

Thanks Mike, I use a Wacom Bamboo and I use mine in pen mode only, it works much better than in mouse mode, give it a try!

I tried to find some online instructions/manual/tutorials on the XP-1209B-vs and did not find much. There's a couple tube vids on pressure testing, otherwise there's not much out there on this tablet. I hope it came with good instructions.

Wacom Bamboo here too. Biggest problem I have with it is that it tends to "lose it's mind" sometimes and will just quit working. I have found though that when it does that, if I unplug it and click on the Bamboo dock, it will come back. It's just a nuisance more than anything..and yes I have the latest drivers. I'm running it on a Dell laptop for 4GB ram. Otherwise it's a dream, I love it.

I should have stated, I use mine with the pen only. Tablets are just a fancy mouse like tool. My PS has gone up a couple of levels due to better masks I make due to the pen input....lots more control
