Question on Actions

Being very new to anything to do with photo work & image manipulation, I have been using actions just to see the results, & get a grip of the common techniques. I like to understand how they work, not just how they look.

I downloaded an Action called "Legendary HDR", now I like this overall effect so I thought I would have a go. On some of the photo's I have it works fine, and the result is great.

I tried it on a photo of a Praying Mantis on what appears to be a white-ish ledge, and every time it fails, & gives "command not currently available"

My question is.. Is it the large white areas that stop it from working or is there a problem with the image. I haven't posted the image yet in case it's a basic answer, but I can if anyone needs it.

That error always perplexes people. Often, it arises because some particular command within the action is not available for certain types of images (eg, CMYK or grayscale or RGB 32 bit per channel images), and is available only for, say, RGB 8 bpc images.

Thx Tom, I will look into that. I don't fully understand all the terminology, but It will give me something to delve a bit deeper into. Solving errors & problems are the best way to learn. :)

I have another question on Actions. I want to be able to see what the action has actually done. I've looked at the action itself, and it reads like commands, & I also checked the History, but there isn't a lot of info there either. For example, if you go to a Style, you can see exactly what has been done to achieve that effect. Is this possible with an Action.

I'm not sure I understand well your question but... I'm French. If you mean that you want to control step by step what an action does, yes it's possible. You just need to check the dialog box on the left and your action will stop at every step and the appropriate window will pop up. This way you can eventually modify settings, when done click ok and your action restarts. Did that help? Btw, congratulations, Broome will tomorrow win Le Tour de France!

That's close enough for me :) At least I can see all the steps, & settings. That way I see how these things are achieved. Makes learning what does what much easier. It's like that programme on TV, "How it Works". Break something down, & you understand how.
