Problem with pencil tool

Hey all,

I'm trying to follow a tutorial on making a cartoonish look from a photograph and I'm supposed to trace with the pencil tool and end up with like a selection of the skin in the picture.

But when I try to do what they say, I get this black color.



I'd appreciate any help you guys can offer!

It's because your pen tool(not pencil) is set to shape layers instead of paths. Right under the edit drop down menu is where you need to be looking.

It would have been nice if my tutorial told me to do that.

I'm also having another issue.

In the tutorial the person seems to be able to draw the line extending out of the picture, in mine it wont let me do anything outside the picture.

With the polygonal lasso tool you can select outside of the document borders, but with the pen tool you can not.

Now I think I'm going to bed cause flames are about to shoot from my eyes. Starting to think I'm just incapable of using photoshop.

Trying to trace the figure and use the little adjustment handles to curve the line and then the next segment I create is all wacky.

I miss Adobe Flash where all I had to do what grab the line and bend it how I wanted. I could have this thing traced in a couple minutes in flash. *sigh*

Just takes practice man. I remember the first time I used the pen tool it took me like 20 minutes just to trace around a figure.

Next time you want to make a traced selection. Be sure you pentool settings are like this.
