Problem with feather...

I've just started using Photoshop again after a long break, and now I'm having a problem. Whenever I use the rectangular marquee tool with feather and then fill it, I get this:

How do I get a nice clean line instead of fading edges like that?

see the panel at the top, where tolerance is set at 32....change that number to '0'. When you say " whenever I use the rectangular marquee tool with feather", that's exactly what you're getting...feathering. In this case, 32 pixels worth of feathering.

Thanks for the reply. I did that though and I still get the same effect. Are there other settings somewhere that I'm missing? Or should I reinstall PS maybe?

No other setting for this function comes to mind..try clearing your PS preferances before you go through the hassle of re-installing though. Something may be stuck in there ???

Make sure the selection isn't feathered to begin with. Check the settings in the marquee tool also... and of course... don't use the "feather" function. ;)

Actually tolerance is not related to feathering. Tolerance is related to a color range, like with the magic wand tool. In my example I'm able to fill a larger range of blue by increasing the tolerance to 100.

Yes, it's also my suspicion that the feather for the selection is set to something other than 0.

I meant 'feather'...sorry...that's what happens when you get old. Feather..tolerance..tolerance..feather..they're both numbers in a little white box. 8))
