Problem with a selection from a layer

When I paste a new layer on top of background, erase part of that layer then select part of that layer, it includes the background in the selection as if it's part of the same layer (it isn't). How do I switch this off so it only selects the top layer? It's driving me mad.

Hello and welcome to PSG.

Can you post a screen shot of your problem?

One suggestion would be to just turn off (deactivate) the background layer. Anytime you create a deficit in one layer above another, it will show what's underneath.

I ask for screen shots and maybe a better explanation because there might be a simple solution.
