Problem moving a layer

When I attempt to use the move tool to move a layer, as I grab the object in that layer, the move tool suddenly switches to the highest most layer, not the layer I selected. I can't seem to change this and this only started happening recently. Very annoying. I'm using Photoshop CS3.

Any ideas?

Look at the tool options at the top, it sounds like you have auto-select checked.
