Printing on OS X

I am transitioning from OS 9 to OS X and am running into some problems with printing.
I am using a G4 mac DP, 1.25 Mhz. and an Epson Stylus Photo 820. and I'm running both systems on my G4.
I had been using PS 7 with OS 9 and printing out pictures without any problems but I recently downloaded the Try out version of Adobe PS CS2 and decided to use it to print out some of the pictures on OS X.

In the Print Preview the options were set to let the printer determine colours. When that was OK'd the next print page showed only the printer and the presets which said Standard.
The problem I'm having is that the picture takes less than a minute to print and is of poor quaility compared to printing the same picture on OS 9 with PS 7 which takes maybe 2 or 3 minutes. The printer is printing at 300 dpi on OS 9 but i'm not sure what it is printing at on OS X. Not sure how to check that with OS X. Like I said earlier I'm not that familiar with OS X yet. Maybe someone might have some suggestions.

After Print Preview, when you hit the print button, the Print Dialog comes up with Copies and Pages as the default window. However Copies and Pages is just the tip of the menu iceberg, so to speak. In that menu, the two important ones for your immediate needs are Print Settings and Color Management.

In Color Management, first try printing with Off (no color adjustment) selected as Photoshop has been chosen to perform the color management already. The real important one for print quality is Print Settings. There, choose your Media Type. Click the Advanced radio button and you can change the Print Quality settings. I prefer Best Photo, in general but there is one higher setting when Epson Glossy Photo Paper is selected.

Your print dialog may differ somewhat for this is the one for the Stylus C86 which is the only printer I have attached to this computer at present.

Good Luck!

Thanks Welles that was a big help, I made the right selections and now it's printing just fine.
Thanks also for pointing me towards the Russell Brown tutorials they are great just what I need.
