Premature Selectulation

Hi folks,
I'm experiencing an odd (but consistent, long-term and ongoing) problem with my selection tools.
Basically it seems like I have only a few seconds to make a selection before the decision is taken out of my hands.
For instance, let's say I'm using the polygonal lasso tool to select a complicated area of an image.
I place a couple of points quickly and then, as I'm trying to get the third (or nth) point in exactly the right place, the screen sort of flashes and BAM not only is the nth point placed at wherever my selection happens to be, but the selection is closed and finalised with a straight line directly from that point back to the start - all without me pressing a button/key.
I'm using Photoshop CS4 Extended on a Windows 7 system, and nothing else seems to suffer from this - just Photoshop.
While nobody has died from it yet it is absolutely infuriating. Is this a common thing? Is there a fix?

Should read "not only is the nth point placed at wherever my mouse pointer happens to be, but the selection is closed and finalised..."

You seem to have a problem with your Mouse click mate.. it seems to send a double click message/register a double click when you single click to make a selection..

Try to use another mouse and if the problem persists. This had happened to me in the past few times too

Thanks for the quick reply Chitkaran, but the point is that I am not clicking at all. After a few seconds it just draws a line from wherever my mouse happens to be back to the start point and that's it - selection done - without me clicking even once.

Also, for information, this happens on my home machine also and when using my tablet.

No, in fact, on my works machine at the moment I don't even have the tablet attached.

Well I don't have a solution, but the same thing happens to me. when making a selection with the poly lasso tool I only have about thirty seconds to make my next click or PS automatically closes it off for me.
I can assure you I've had my share of throw the computer through the window moments because of it.

I just figured that's what PS does so I've never looked into it. It has forced me to use the pen tool when I'm making large, complex selections though.
