What is the effect or process to, for example, ensure that normally washed out bright background on, say, a sunny beach, has same depth and contrast as the darker subject in the foreground? It is an unnatural state since your eye and most cameras will adjust to one extreme or the other.

Thank you,

Sam

I am not exactly sure whether you ask about taking picture or post processing.

While taking picture you can set up your camera manually to be sure you would not get any burned out areas and you capture all details you want. Sometimes filters can help, depending on situation, UV, polarising etc.

In post processing you can either use manual "painting" or divide the picture into two parts and edit them separate. By painting I do not mean colours, but dodge and burn tools, mask for adjustment layers and similar.

A friend reminded me. It's called HDR. Usually used with RAW photos, some apps exist to mimic the look of a real HDR photograph. Thanks, Sam

True HDR uses at least 3 different exposure layers 5 will work better. What you are doing is using full tonality, like the zone system in B&W photography...along with sharpening and contrast adjustments.
