Plane crash issues

I've been working on this image today but I just can't seem to get the image to feel right. I can't really identify what the problem may be which doesn't help either!

Any suggestions on how to improve the image would be great!

blur the edges of the smoke more on the left side, lower the overall opacity of it too would be where i would start

If you consider the nose of the plane the foreground and the tail the background, blur some of the edge detail of the plane as you move backwards towards the BG. This adds depth.
It's also lacking any convincing shadows. The wing would be producing a ground shadow as well as that dense smoke column.

Update

Thanks for the responses guys. I think the shadows have definitely improved the overall composition of the image! The selective blurring of both the smoke and the aircraft has also helped.

Interact is the name of the game here!
Make the fuselage on fire or charred: some in front, some obscured.
Make the smoke on both ends: some in front, some obscured.
Make the sand cover some part of fuselage, make the grooves and cracks in the sand. Now it looks like it's been there forever.

Make the shadows of smoke on the sand and fuselage
Make the smoke sharp and distinctive. Now it looks like it's miles away from the scene.

If you want it to look realistic make the parts "interact" in some way: partially cover each other, drop the shadows on each other, lighten or darken each other, etc.

If there is no reason to, then just make them up. Stop looking for easy ways. In the end of the day you are looking for makebelieve!

And do something with portholes. Just black won't do. Add some details there.
